St. John's Pride Parade

Join MUNSU at the St. John’s Pride Parade!

After St. John’s Pride made the decision to ban all police and police insignia from the Pride parade, as well as return money they’d received from sponsors on the BDS list (supporting Israel’s genocide in Palestine), MUNSU will be participating in the annual St. John’s Pride Parade!

Please come out to show your support for the queer community in St. John’s, and always remember - Stonewall was an Intifada!

Pride on the Harbour

Organized by Palestine Action YYT:

Join us at Harbourside Park on July 14th from 1PM-3PM for Pride on the Harbour!

Pride on the Harbour is a celebration of queer love and pride, but most importantly, of community. Away from pinkwashing and corporate advertising masquerading as care, this is an event by the community, for the community.

Hosting us is Irma Gerd of Canada's Drag Race S3 with local drag icons Andrezi, Eda Kumqaut, Gravy, Liezel Hues, Madame Daddy, and Sugars Arlowe! This is an all-ages event so feel free to bring your family, friends, and animal companions for an afternoon of drag, community, and more!

This is a free, family-friendly event with no admission or tickets required to be booked beforehand.

National Day of Action

MUNSU is inviting you to join with students across the country to demand accessible education! In 2021, the provincial government cut over $68 million from Memorial’s operating budget, and MUN administration increased tuition by over 200%. Since this, we have seen massive decreases in enrolment and increases in food insecurity on campus. After the recent Auditor General’s report condemned the misuse of government funds by university admin, we know that now it is more important than ever to demand free and accessible education from our leaders.

Last November, students across the province participated in a similar protest that, according to government officials, directly caused the government to return funding to Memorial and for the Campus Renewal Fee ($50 per course) to be completely eliminated for the 2023-24 year.

Direct action works - in 2023 alone, MUNSU also fought for and won a 10% tuition refund for Winter 2023 and successfully pressured admin to save the SWCC from losing their accreditation.

Join us at 11am on Wednesday, November 8 at MUN Clocktower. We will be marching with students from Marine Institute, College of the North Atlantic, graduate students, and in solidarity with thousands of students across Canada.

All professors have been encouraged by MUN Senate to waive any assessments and participation marks planned for November 8. If you have any issues with a prof with regards to these recommendations, please email advocacy@munsu.ca.

Student Town Hall Meeting

Hold Government and University Admin Accountable!

The MUN Students' Union has invited government leaders and university administrators to a student town hall taking place on Wednesday, April 26th at 7 pm at the Breezeway Cafe and Bar.

The town hall will be hybrid with the opportunity to attend in person or virtually via a Zoom link and a live stream on MUNSU's social media channels. The town hall is not exclusive to students - faculty, parents, and community members are encouraged to join and submit their own questions. In the event that we reach capacity, students will be prioritized for in-person attendance.

Confirmed Attendees:

  1. Memorial President Dr. Neil Bose

  2. Memorial Provost Dr. Jennifer Lokash

  3. Opposition Leader David Brazil (PC MHA)

  4. Education Critic Barry Petten (PC MHA)

  5. Third Party Leader Jim Dinn (NDP MHA)

  6. at least one Liberal Minister (confirmed by the Premier)

Unconfirmed:

  1. Premier Andrew Furey (Liberal MHA)

  2. Education Minister John Haggie (Liberal MHA)

  3. Finance Minister Siobhan Coady (Liberal MHA)

  4. Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne (Liberal MHA)

We encourage questions about the growing inaccessibility of post-secondary education, the barriers found within our provincial immigration system, the tuition hikes and their subsequent consequences, and how these things impact you specifically based on your individual experience.

Questions highlighting the experience of international students, racialized students, Indigenous students, Black students, queer and trans students, students with disabilities, and students otherwise structurally failed by our governing institutions will be prioritized.
