Assistant Manager - The Breezeway

The Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union (MUNSU) is seeking to hire an Assistant Manager to assist with the management and operations of the Breezeway Cafe. The position will assist with managing the student staff, opening in the mornings, and overseeing the Breezeway Cafe and Food Services. 

The Assistant Manager plays a key role in providing the students of MUNSU with a safe and secure environment to meet and socialize on campus. The successful candidate must have a natural passion for student life on campus and possess strong leadership, organization, and management skills. In addition, the successful candidate must enjoy working in a team environment, assisting with the planning, implementing, and executing events at the Breezeway Cafe in conjunction with the Director of Student Life. 

This position supervises the student staff, liaises with the General Manager and Operations Coordinator, and reports directly to the Executive of the MUN Students’ Union. 

Salary: Assistant Manager position Step 1 ($25.17/hour) plus benefits (per CUPE 4554 collective agreement). 

Hours of Work: 7 a.m.- 3 p.m. Monday-Friday, 35 hours per week. Must be able to work flexible hours (evenings/weekends may be required). 

Responsibilities 

● Make and serve coffee, tea, and espresso-based beverages (hot & cold)
● Assist with all ordering, inventory, billing, and sales deposits for the Breezeway;
● Assist with ensuring adequate staffing for all areas of the Breezeway;
● Conduct briefings and training to ensure staff have strong product knowledge in coffee and food services. 

● Assist with the creation of the Breezeway budget and implementing strategies to achieve overall goals and sales targets; 

● Responsible for all bookings of the Breezeway Cafe, in consultation with the Manager and the Executive. 

● Have current working knowledge of NL liquor laws, MUNL policies, criminal and fire codes; Food Services NL 

● Manage freshness standards regarding consumable products while also controlling waste 

● Support student staff at peak times and undertake any operational duties where required. 

● Assist in hiring new staff 

● Foster an environment where improvement to products, processes, and services are welcomed and encouraged;

● Ensure that the Breezeway and its staff are reflecting the values of the MUN Students Union; 

● Deal with appropriate policing agencies as required 

● All other related duties about the operation of the Breezeway Bar & Cafe 

Qualifications 

Education 

● Graduation from High School supplemented with a diploma or degree in Business Administration, Hospitality Management, or related field. 

● An equivalent combination of experience and training will also be considered. Experience and Training 

● Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in the Hospitality Industry 

● One (1) years experience working as a barista, one (1) year experience in a supervisory or leadership position. 

● Knowledge of various applicable laws and codes essential (i.e., Liquor Laws, Criminal and Fire Codes, Health and Safety Act, etc.) 

● Proficient with Point-of-Sales systems and relevant technologies 

● A current and valid NL driver’s license is essential 

● Strong organizational, management, and event-planning skills
● Previous restaurant, bar, or hospitality management experience (2-3 years preferred). 

Contract duration: Permanent Position 

Start date: Immediately
