Student Space
The lack of space for students on campus is becoming an increasingly serious problem. Over the past several years the university administration has reassigned cafeterias, study spaces, lounges and common areas to other functions. The result is that students have no space on campus to sit, read, study, meet, eat, or perform other functions that are important and complementary to the university experience. Additionally, multi-functional rooms, gyms, concert facilities, and other large spaces have also been eliminated. The result has negatively impacted students - as well as faculty and staff - as a community.
The Students' Union is committed to fighting for more space for and controlled by students on campus. Students' needs are varied - from multi-faith prayer space and meeting rooms, to study areas and concert venues - and if the university is to continue to meet the needs of students in a twenty-first century environment, it is crucial that these needs be integrated into all future campus planning initiatives. The Students' Union intends to campaign on this issue in the coming year, both to save and preserve what little student space remains on campus, as well as to ensure that students' needs are met in the months and years ahead.
