Students attend pre-budget consultations, encourage continued investment in post-secondary education

ST. JOHN’S, NL – Post-secondary education must remain a priority in the 2013 budget. This was the message delivered to Minister of Finance Jerome Kennedy by students in attendance at pre-budget consultations in St. John’s and Corner Brook over the past week.

“Our provincial government’s investments in our students and institutions of higher learning over the last decade have paid immense dividends for Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Candace Simms, Director of Advocacy with the MUN Students’ Union (MUNSU) - CFS Local 35. “Not only does funding for post-secondary education positively impact students and their families, it allows the province to realize long-term savings in areas like health care, justice,
and social assistance, as well as increased revenue from an expansion of the tax base.”

“Our government anticipates 70,000 job openings by the year 2020 and according to their research, 95% of new jobs in this province require a post-secondary diploma or degree,” said Robert Leamon, President of the Grenfell Campus Student Union (GCSU) – CFS Local 36.

“In order to fill these jobs and ensure our future economic and social prosperity, we need to continue to attract youth from the rest of Canada and around the world, while ensuring that every Newfoundlander and Labradorian with the ability and desire can get the skills they need to contribute to the province’s future job market.”

Students’ budget recommendations include maintaining the tuition fee freeze and expanding the needs based grants program, both of which were commitments in the Progressive Conservative 2011 Policy Blue Book. Students also urge the provincial government to maintain adequate funding for Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic in 2013 and beyond.

“Investments in post-secondary education can not be seen solely as a cost in the current fiscal year. These are investments in our communities, in our job market, and in the youth of this province who will be the driving force of the economy for many years to come,” said Michael Walsh, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students - Newfoundland and Labrador. “Our government has made progress in reducing student debt and youth
outmigration. Now is not the time to abandon that progress. Now is not the time to undo that
good work.”

The Canadian Federation of Students - Newfoundland and Labrador represents every public university and college student in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Uniting Against Cuts to College of the North Atlantic

8 April 2013

Membership Advisory: Uniting Against Cuts to College of the North Atlantic

Dear Members,

On March 26, 2013, the Provincial Government tabled the 2013 Newfoundland and Labrador Budget. While Budget 2013 maintained funding for the tuition fee freeze, grants program, 0% interest on provincial student loans, and increased funding for Memorial, it failed to meet students’ expectations in a key area – adequate funding for the College of the North Atlantic (CNA).

The cuts to funding for the College of the North Atlantic are an attack on Newfoundland and Labrador’s public post-secondary education system and set a dangerous precedent for all post-secondary programs – including those at Memorial University. Government has announced that in the coming year a full review of both Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic will be undertaken. These cuts to Newfoundland and Labrador’s only public college show that nothing in post-secondary education is off limits.

In response to this attack on post-secondary education, the MUNSU Research and Communications Committee unanimously passed an emergency motion condemning the cuts to the College of the North Atlantic and advocating public support for the efforts of the College of the North Atlantic Students’ Union to fight back against this attack on education in our province.

There will be province-wide demonstrations held on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 12:00 PM so that students, staff, and community members can stand in solidarity against this attack on public education and show support for the continuation of a fully-funded, high quality, public college in this province. Members of the MUNSU Board of Directors will be attending the rally being held at the College of the North Atlantic Prince Phillip Drive Campus. We strongly encourage all students to attend and support the demonstrations and actions of the College of the North Atlantic Students’ Union. A list of demonstration locations across the province and a membership advisory from the College of the North Atlantic Students’ Union is attached hereto.

For more information or to get involved in actions against the cuts to the College of the North Atlantic, the move to privatize public programs, and the attack on our public system of post-secondary education contact your MUNSU Board of Directors at munsu@munsu.ca.

In Solidarity,

The MUN Students’ Union Board of Directors

The Fight for Fair Copyright

Students Applaud Memorial’s Decision to Reject Proposed Deal with Access Copyright

Students at Memorial University of Newfoundland are applauding the University Administration’s decision to reject the proposed copyright agreement with Access Copyright. “We are ecstatic that our institution listened to the demands of students and faculty and did not sign the model license agreement”, explains Erin Edwards, Executive Director of External Affairs with Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union. “Over the past two months, students have lobbied the administration to reject the proposed arrangement that is unnecessary, intrusive, and costly.”

The model license agreement that the University was considering is a product of a negotiation between the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) and Access Copyright, a copyright license-granting agency that collects copyright fees from universities and colleges on behalf of various publishers.

Memorial joins a growing list of Canadian universities including the University of British Columbia, Athabasca University, the University of Windsor, the University of Winnipeg, the University of Waterloo, York University, Mount Royal University, Trent University and the University of New Brunswick who have opted out of the agreement.

The Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union represents over 13, 000 undergraduate students at Memorial University’s St. John’s campus and is a member local of the Canadian Federation of Students.
