WalkSafe
In the early 1990s, the MUN Students' Union established the WalkSafe service in order to provide free and safe escorts to students, faculty and staff who were travelling around campus at night. Those who wish to avail of the service phone WalkSafe at 737-3737 during advertised hours of operation, and volunteer escorts will meet them and travel with them to their destination on campus. WalkSafe is staffed entirely by student volunteers and coordinated by the Students' Union.
SafeDrive
In 2001, the MUN Students' Union expanded its services by introducing SafeDrive. While WalkSafe provided escorts for members of the university community who were travelling within the boundaries of the MUN campus, there was no safe escort service for those travelling off-campus after hours. Public transit schedules were often inconveniently designed for students taking night courses, and providing safe escorts for students going home became a concern. SafeDrive provides vehicular transportation for students who are leaving the MUN campus and travelling to a destination so as to permit the van to return to campus for the following hour.
The SafeDrive van leaves at the top of every hour between 7:00pm - 12:00am (Sunday-Thursday) from the SafeDrive departure location, which is situated in the parking lot at the base of the Clocktower steps (across from the QEII Library rear entrance). Normally there is adequate space for all comers, however in the event there are more students waiting than the van will hold, transportation is provided according to drop-off location. The van will then return and immediately transport any students who were required to wait.
Hours of Operation:
Sunday to Thursday 7pm-12am
